Northern Cape police enhanced efforts to address contact crimes, namely murder and rape as well as robbery and housebreaking.
High-density operations were executed across the province in hotspot areas, where over 200 suspects were arrested since Monday, 1 July 2024.
Detectives traced and arrested 112 wanted suspects for serious crimes, including murder, rape and assault GBH.
Multi-disciplinary teams arrested 110 suspects for crimes such as illegal dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, business and residential robbery, attempted murder, assault GBH, business and residential burglary and theft of motor vehicle.
The high-density actions comprised of roadblocks, vehicle check points, and stop and search of persons and vehicles. A total of 2 561 persons and 1 369 vehicles were stopped and searched.
Compliance inspections were conducted at liquor premises, firearm dealers, second-hand goods dealers, scrapyards, and informal businesses.
Five (5) unlicensed liquor outlets were closed, and over 500 litres of alcohol was confiscated.
Actions led to the confiscation of dangerous weapons, ammunition, and a considerable amount of drugs, including dagga, Tik, and mandrax tablets.
Community engagements were conducted in all districts to address the needs of the community and to enhance awareness regarding the prevention of domestic violence, contact crimes, rural safety, fraud, card scams and housebreaking and theft.
Awareness was accomplished through door-to-door visits, pamphlet distribution at shopping centres, and stakeholder meetings.
These disruptive actions will continue to be unabated to address priority crimes in hotspot areas throughout the province. Communities are encouraged to share information regarding criminal activities to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.
