Gauteng police arrest three illegal miners during Operation Vala Umgodi in Ekurhuleni

On Thursday, 18 July 2024, the police in Springs, Ekurhuleni District carried out an integrated operation to address illegal mining activities in the area. This operation which aimed at tackling unlawful mining practices, resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of several items including illegal mining equipment, a bag of gold-bearing sand, electric motors, and shovels among other items.

The suspects will be facing charges related to illegal mining and illegal possession of gold-bearing sand as per the Mineral Act 50 of 1991, and they will appear before court soon.
