Police continue to rid the streets of unlicensed firearms and ammunition

Determined to provide a safer environment for communities, police members continue to rid the streets of unlicensed firearms and ammunition when they arrested two suspects in isolated incidents on Saturday 27 July 2024

Manenberg police were busy with patrols near to Renoster Walk when their attention was drawn to an unknown man who fled when he saw the patrol vehicle. The members gave chase on foot and apprehended the man inside a house in Rio Grande Walk. They searched the man and found a Beretta 9mm pistol in his possession. The man could not produce a valid license to be in possession of the mentioned firearm. The police members then arrested the 35-year-old man for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated intervention, Lentegeur police followed up on information of a person in possession of a firearm without a valid license. Armed with the information at their disposal they entered an address in Venter Street in Mandalay, searched the premises and recovered a pistol with ammunition. The adult male who was present during the search, who was in fact the person of interest, could not provide an acceptable explanation for the firearm being in his possession without a license to possess the mentioned firearm. They detained the adult male for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone and Mitchells Plain Magistrate courts on the mentioned charges.
