Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: We wish to thank honourable members in the KZN Legislature for supporting the budget for the department.
This is a clear commitment to ensure that the Department of Transport becomes a catalyst for job creation and the improvement of the quality of life for each citizen.
We were encouraged by their frank interrogation of our budget and their guidance following our presentation of our program of action.
In particular, their support of our plans to ensure stability in the taxi industry gives us more confidence.
Currently, our Roving Taxi Industry Conflict Management Task Team is engaging associations and the South African National Taxi Council in meetings scheduled as follows:
●Date: 01 August 2024
Focus – Ulundi Mahlabathini Taxi Association: Follow up meeting on issues raised by the Nkonjeni operators and to restore stability within the association.
●Date: 02 August
Focus – Ikhwezi Taxi Association: Resolving conflict over long distance operations between Johannesburg and Durban.
●Date: 03 – 04 August
Focus: Engagement with SANTACO Office bearers and PEC on stability.
Lastly, as pointed out by the Head of Department, Siboniso Mbhele and Team Transport, we are reintroducing a zero-tolerance approach for all drivers in all corners of the province.
We have agreed to re-establish an integrated plan targeting strategic spots in various spots, including when you enter KwaZulu-Natal from other provinces and neighboring countries.
We will be deploying multi-disciplinary teams involving SAPS and law enforcement officers in various municipalities.
More details will be announced during the presentation of the budget speech.
