Following the launch of Operation Basadi for August Women’s Month by the Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo SAPS Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, in the presence of Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and the MEC for Transport and Community Safety Ms Violet Mathye, on Thursday, 08 August 2024 at Thavhani Mall, Thohoyandou in Vhembe District, the multi-disciplinary forces, from different government sectors, arrested 825 suspects, from 05 August until 11 August 2024.
Two firearms and ammunition were recovered and five stolen or hijacked motor vehicles.
The operations were conducted through roadblocks and stop and searches that targeted crime trends that are prevalent in the province.
The suspects were charged with offenses ranging from burglary, assault, carjacking, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, dealing in drugs, rape, murder, theft out of motor vehicles and possession of dangerous weapons, amongst others.
The law enforcement agencies participated in the operations across the five districts, with various SAPS units, SANDF, private security companies, sister departments, community partnerships, and other stakeholders.
Among the arrested suspects, about 32 wanted suspects were arrested for serious and violent crimes such as rape, robberies, and assaults GBH.
“We appreciate the magnificent efforts displayed by the law enforcement agencies for hitting hard on criminals and keeping the citizens of this province safe and secure,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
Some of the suspects have already appeared before different Magistrate’s Courts.
