Two suspects were arrested on charges of business robbery at a Engen garage in Lotus River

Around 18h00 on Monday afternoon, members of Law Enforcement stopped a motorcycle for a traffic infringement in Dewet Road, Lotus River.

While issuing the fine, the officers became swamped and surrounded by around 20 members of the Mongrels gang.

A tense stand-off occurred, unbeknown to the officers that this was a distraction to mask an armed robbery that was taking place at the Engen garage across the road.

Law Enforcement officers were alerted when they noticed persons running out of the convenience store, carrying cartons of cigarettes, items and the cash register.

The suspects threatened to shoot the officers approaching, forcing them to withdraw their weapons.

But since the fuel station and convenience store was filled with members of the public, the officers were unable to open fire without causing injury to innocent bystanders.

The group quickly moved into a getaway vehicle parked close by, and sped away.

This while 2 other person’s in the group headed for another vehicle. Officers pursued and were able to prevent the 2 suspects from escaping.

Both suspects were arrested on charges of business robbery.
