More than R 2.5 million worth of counterfeit goods seized by police in Hazyview during Operation Shanela

The SAPS in Mpumalanga has once again announced through successful activities of Operation Shanela that criminality will never be tolerated in the province and as a result, three individuals i.e. two males aged 30 and 35 years, and a woman (61) were arrested with illicit cigarettes as well as other items worth more than R2.5 Million in Hazyview on Thursday, 22 August 2024 and thanks to the team deployed by the Provincial Office of the SAPS in Mpumalanga.

The team, consisting of members from Tactical Response Team (TRT), K9 Unit, Public Order Policing (POP), Flying Squad, Mounted Unit, Visible Policing, the Police Bikers, and Detective Services made a major breakthrough which began when the team was busy conducting compliance, checking at liquor outlets in the Calcutta area. The members then received credible information regarding a truck suspected of transporting contraband goods.

Acting swiftly on this intelligence, the men and women in Blue traced the information to a residential property in Hazyview.

Upon investigation, a substantial quantity of contraband items were discovered inside a large storage, valued at a street value of over R 2.5 Million.

It was during this time when the three suspects were cornered. When searching inside the premises, the team also discovered about 10 live ammunition. The suspects are faced with charges of unlawful possession of ammunition, as well as possession of illicit goods.

The trio is currently in police custody pending their court appearance soon and the investigation is continues as the team of investigators gather further evidence in relation to this matter.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has appreciated members of the public that provided such valuable information to the authorities whilst commending members for their swift response. “We remain dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of our communities by actively pursuing illegal activities and holding those responsible accountable. We are grateful to members of the community and together, we can create a safer environment for all. This discovery underscores the commitment to combating illegal trade and maintaining law and order in the province,” said the General.
