Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie addressed the parade of traffic law enforcement officers and police before a high-density operation (Operation Shanela) at Vosman yesterday night (30 August 2024).
The operation was preceded by a briefing where the MEC was told that Vosmam is one of the areas with high occurrences of contact crimes such as assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH), common assault and attempted murder.
The police highlighted that alcohol abuse contributed significantly to the commission of contact crimes, especially on weekends.
The briefing also noted that illegal firearms were used in most crimes committed, particularly robberies and car hijackings.
It was also alleged that some criminals have access to explosives that are reportedly used for ATM bombings in the area.
The area also has challenges of spikes on the road, especially the N4 toll road and the N12 highway.
Speaking during the parade, Macie said he was happy with the work that the police were doing in the province. He enjoined them to protect each other, and the communities against ruthless criminals.
He called on men and women in blue to always ensure that they write statements meticulously so that such statements contribute to successful prosecution of perpetrators.
Last night’s operation saw the team visiting taverns, shopping malls, patrolling various routes, and also looking for wanted suspects.
