Members of the media,

Today, we gather with a profound sense of reverence and gratitude as we come together to honour the memory and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the South African Police Service who have given their lives in the line of duty. It is my privilege and deep honour to welcome you all to this solemn commemoration ceremony.

As we assemble here, we are united by a shared commitment to remembering those who have fallen, and to acknowledging the extraordinary courage and dedication they exhibited in the pursuit of justice and the protection of our communities. Each name inscribed on our memorial, stands as a testament to the ultimate sacrifice made by those who wore the uniform with pride and integrity.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are exploring the possibility as to how the SAPS can assist families with civil claims against those responsible for the murder of police officers. This initiative aims to ensure that justice is served, not just through criminal proceedings but also by holding perpetrators financially accountable for the pain and loss they have caused.

In response to the growing concerns about the well-being of our officers, we will be establishing a Task Team focused on wellness-related issues. This team will be dedicated to addressing both the physical and mental health needs of our police force, ensuring that our programmes are effective and that every officer receives the support they need to serve our communities effectively and safely.

We are also committed to strengthening our partnerships with sister departments and establishing cooperation agreements with provincial and local governments. By working closely together, we can create a unified front against crime, share resources more effectively, and provide better protection for our citizens and our officers.

Finally, let us remember the importance of solidarity in our line of work. “Let’s cover each other’s back” is not just a saying but a principle that guides us. We must always be vigilant, look out for one another, and ensure that every officer feels supported and protected, both on and off duty. Together, we stand stronger.

As we reflect on the legacy of those we commemorate today, let us remember, not only their sacrifice, but also their enduring spirit. They exemplified the highest ideals of service and bravery, and their contributions will forever be etched in the fabric of our nation’s history. Let us also renew our commitment to supporting those who continue to serve, ensuring that their bravery and sacrifices are never forgotten.

In honouring the memory of our fallen heroes, we also extend our deepest condolences to their families, who have endured unimaginable loss. Your loved ones’ courage and dedication will always be remembered and cherished.

Today is a day of remembrance, but it is also a day of reaffirming our collective resolve to uphold the values of justice, safety, and service that our fallen officers held dear. Let us carry their legacy forward with honour and pride.
