Free State knock-out team dismantle illicit mining as 366 suspects are put behind bars

Operation Knockout in the fight against illicit mining has brought back the authority of the state in Lejweleputswa and surrounding areas.

The disruptive multidisciplinary operation actions and reacting on information about illicit trade taking place at any shaft in the Welkom vicinity is what makes the project a success. Old shafts are tactically approached, and the suspects are arrested while in the act of illegal mining

These following are arrests as the team worked throughout the August month. Armed Robbery 1, Assault on Police 2, Corruption 3, Crimen Injuria 3, Dealing in Dagga 1, Possession of Drugs 1, Defeating End of Justice/Obstruction 4, Fraud 9, Trespass 28, Possession of GBM 76, Illegal Immigrant 235.

Confiscations include homemade equipment used in illegal mining, gold-bearing material, drugs such as Mandrax, Dagga and chrystal meth, as well as money acquired in the selling of drugs. The team also cleaned the streets of undocumented people who were handed over to Home Affairs.

The Knockout Team continues unabated to make Lejweleputswa safe from illicit mining while also working as a force multiplier for local stations in the area. The operation continues.
