Combined efforts focused on clearing illegal mining sites in Pilgrims Rest in the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality

As promised two weeks ago, Mpumalanga Premier, Mr Mandla Ndlovu and Commmunity Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Mr Jackie Macie, along with Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi led operations at illegal mining sites in Pilgrims Rest in the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality.

The tourist town saw a convergence of the South Africa Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Department of Home Affairs and other members of the Security

Cluster raiding various sites around the town invaded by foreign nationals from countries such as Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Lesotho, who mine illegally.

So far, about 16 people have been arrested in connection with illegal mining activities. The team also confiscated equipment used in this clandestine activities.
