Kutloanong mother arrested after newborn baby found in chest freezer

On 11 September 2024 at about 09:00, Odendaalsrus Police received a complaint from a resident in Kutloanong who discovered a newborn baby inside a chest freezer in a shack on his premises.

Upon arrival at the scene, members discovered the body of a newborn baby inside a chest freezer wrapped in a tracksuit top placed inside a plastic carry bag. The body of the baby was already in a frozen state.

The mother was not at her rented house when the baby was discovered. Paramedics were summoned to the scene and certify the newborn baby dead. A case of concealment of birth was registered for further investigation.

The police initiated a search for the mother and she handed herself over to the Odendaalsrus police the next day.

The 27-year-old mother was arrested and will appear on 16 September 2024 in Odendaalsrus Magistrates’ Court.
