The official opening of the National Road Safety Debate and Participatory Educational Techniques (PET) competition is underway at Imvelo Safari in Bloemfontein, in the Free State Province.

Sixteen learners from the Mpumalanga Province will be participating in various categories of the competition namely; Road Safety Debate Urban Category, Road Safety Debate Rural Category, PET Rural and Urban categories.

This project was initiated in 2004 after road crash statistics showed that most of the crashes involved people under 25 years of age. Road Safety Debate and PET competition is therefore dedicated to young road users who use the roads
as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, novice drivers and passengers.

The Mpumalanga teams have gone through a lot of stages in the competition as it started from school level then proceeded to Municipal and progressed to Regional level and provincial.

All these stages were coordinated by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.
