Shots fired after dispute over damaged cellphone in Temple Valley

A 28-year-old man narrowly escaped injury after he was pursued and shot at three (3) times in Temple Valley – KZN today.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were called out to a business premises on Republic Street after receiving reports of shots being fired at an employee. Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched and arrived on scene at approximately 13:16.

Officers interviewed the Waterloo – KZN resident. He explained that yesterday (Wednesday) he handed his cellphone to a tuck shop for charging. He discovered that the phone was damaged and was unable to charge after he returned home.
He returned to the tuck shop today to pay the R5 owed for the charging service and enquired about the damages to his device. An argument ensued between the complainant and the female operating the tuck shop. The female’s husband intervened which resulted in the argument turning physical.

The customer alleged that he was assaulted with a baseball bat and retaliated by hurling a brick at his attacker. He thereafter fled on foot, but was pursued by the shopkeeper’s husband in a blue Mitsubishi Pajero. Two (2) shots were fired during the chase and one (1) was fired as the male entered his employer’s premises. The Mitsubishi Pajero then sped off.

The man led Reaction Officers to the tuck shop approximately 100 metres away. The driver of the Mitsubishi Pajero confirmed that he fired shots. He sustained an injury to his hand. The complainant initially desired a criminal case, but declined after the owner of the tuck shop offered to replace his cellphone.

The incident was reported to the Verulam SAPS.
