The multi-disciplinary illegal mining operation “Vala Umgodi” was conducted in Sinqobile informal settlement at Kagiso and Ennerdale simultenously on 03 and 06 October 2024.
In Ennerdale, one suspect was arrested for possession of mandrax, crystal meth and Kat to an estimated street value of R200 000 and undisclosed amount of cash.
While in Kagiso, two suspects were arrested for possession of one unlicensed firearm with a filled off serial number and 70 rounds of live ammunition.
The following illegal mining tools were seized;
* 22 Phendukas
* 4 spades
* 58 Iron balls
* 8 motors
* 3 extension cord
* cutting torch, gas cylinder and oxygen cylinder.
Police and community relations is key to fighting illegal mining hence the public is urged to report these illegal activities to their nearest police station or on the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be reported via MySAPSApp.
