Manhunt launched after woman set alight and house torched in Majosi Village in Hlanganani

Police in Hlanganani have launched a manhunt of suspects responsible for setting alight a woman and torching her house during a mob attack on Wednesday, 16 October 2024 at about 15:00.

According to the information, a 43-year-old woman was attacked in her home in Majosi village, Khawulani section, by a group of individuals. The victim was inside her residence when she saw a group of community members approaching her kraal.

Fearing for her safety, she closed the door, but the group forcibly entered her home. The attackers, consisting of four males and one female, demanded to know the whereabouts of her husband. When she replied that she did not know, one of the suspects poured petrol over her, and another ignited it, setting her ablaze.

Following the attack, they set fire to her two-roomed house and a nearby shack. The victim was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

The assailants then attempted to burn down the house of another individual but were interrupted by police, who swiftly responded upon receiving the complaint. They then fled the scene.

Police have opened a case of attempted murder and arson.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned this violent act and urged community members to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing the importance of reporting crime to the police.
