Three suspects arrested for unlawful possession of firearms and attempted murder on police officials

Two suspects are under police guard in hospital and one behind bars in Vaalbank SAPS after they were arrested for attempted murder of police officials and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunitions.

A member from Vaalbank investigation services was on duty when he reacted to a tip-off about a suspicious looking vehicle without registration plates that was parked outside a local liquor outlet. He immediately called for backup from three other detectives who were also on duty.

On their arrival, police spotted a white Hyundai that matched the description and did not have registration plates.

The suspects immediately drove off upon police’s arrival. A high-speed chase ensured. It is alleged that during the chase, the suspects fired shots towards the police resulting in a cross fire.

The suspects’ vehicle allegedly lost control and crashed into a ditch next to the road. All three suspects were allegedly trapped inside the vehicle.

When police approached the vehicle for investigation, three suspects, aged between 31 and 38, were found with each, with a handgun and ammunition.

The suspects could neither produce the firearm licences nor a permit to possess such firearms.

One of the suspects was found in possession of nine small plastic bags containing suspected drugs.

The suspects were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunitions and attempted murder. An additional charge was added to one suspect for possession of suspected drugs.

The suspects are expected to appear before Mbibane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 October 2024.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has commended the whistle blower and the speedy reaction from the detective team.
