An intelligence driven operation was carried out to address the cross-border factors contributing to illicit mining in the Province at Ficksburg. A target house was identified in De Villiers Street used as a hideout for foreign nationals; with information indicating that there are firearms in the house and that the occupants would then travel to other areas where they’d most likely be involved in illegal activities.

The team tactically approached the house and pounced on seven illegal immigrants. A search was conducted and the first firearm; a 9mm Black pistol with a filed off serial number and loaded with seven rounds of ammunition were found where the suspects were sleeping. Further search led to the discovery of another 9mm Pistol with Brown handle loaded with six rounds of ammunition hidden inside the toilet cistern.

Fifteen cellphones with incriminating messages and pictures were also seized. The seven suspects with ages ranging between 30 and 48 were immediately arrested. A case docket of Possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition with an additional charge of Contravention of Immigration Act was opened at Ficksburg Police Station. The suspects will appear before Court soon.
