Metered taxi driver fights off robber on the R102 in Canelands

A 40-year-old metered taxi driver crashed his vehicle while fighting off a robber on the R102 in the vicinity of Canelands – KZN.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were dispatched to the scene at approximately 06:54. On arrival, Reaction Officers met with the victim who explained that he was approached by the suspect posing as a customer at the Durban beachfront. He requested to be transported to Verulam – KZN.

As they approached the destination, the suspect demanded the driver’s cellphone and cash. An altercation ensued which resulted in the Nissan Tida colliding into a metal barrier and the front passenger tyre to burst. The suspect was trapped due to him being unable to open his door. He forced open a rear window and fled with the victim’s cellphone. The driver was not injured.

Reaction Officers assisted to change the damage tyre and conducted a search for the suspect, but no arrests were made.
