SAPS Detectives have release identikits of three suspects, posing as police officers who are wanted in a case of fraud that is being investigated. A 43-year-old African woman from Rheederspark Welkom reported that on 03 October 2024, she was at the corner of Stateway and Tempest Road on her way to Goldfields Mall when an unknown male person rubbed a black substance on her arm.
Immediately thereafter she was approached by an unknown woman who claimed that she has also been smeared with the same substance. They were then allegedly approached by three male persons who posed as police officers, who have shown their SAPS appointment cards and offered to help her. The men, one reportedly wearing a SAPS uniform, allegedly offered to help her and ordered her to get into their vehicle, a white Volkswagen Golf with Gauteng number plates.
She was instructed to stop her bank card through her cellphone and told to wait in Bok Street, Welkom CBD, as the suspect has been arrested.
The complainant suspected that this might be a scam and went to the bank and that’s where she discovered that R3000 cash has been withdrawn fraudulently from her bank account. The incident was reported to Welkom SAPS where a case of fraud was registered for further investigation.
Anyone with information that can assist the police in the tracing and arrests of these bogus cops, is urged to contact the Investigating Officer, Detective Warrant Officer Dylan Saayman of Welkom Detective Services on 084 687 3014 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Tipster may also submit information on the MySAPS App.
Residents are sternly warned to be wary of the modus operandi and to report suspicious activity to the police.
