Operation Shanela continues to squeeze the space for criminals to operate with more boots on the ground during the festive season.
The multi-disciplinary high density operation, commencing on 25 November 2024 until 1 December 2024 secured the arrest of 334 perpetrators for crimes ranging from dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, possession of drugs, murder, attempted murder, rape, assault GBH and burglary.
A zero tolerance approach by the SAPS in collaboration with other Government Departments to address priority crimes resulted in these arrests and confiscation of drugs, alcohol, illicit tobacco products, dangerous weapons and money believed to be the proceeds of crime.
Disruptive actions included roadblocks, vehicle check points, high visibility patrols, and stop and search actions, which resulted in the search of 10 058 persons and 4812 vehicles.
Compliance inspections were conducted at liquor outlets, second-hand goods dealers, scrapyards, and recyclers.
In an attempt to promote food safety and prevent food contamination, inspections were intensified at informal businesses and spaza shops in conjunction with municipalities and relevant role players.
Inspections led to the closure of 19 unlicensed liquor outlets and the confiscation of a significant amount of alcohol and destruction of home brewed concoction.
Police together with community policing structures reached out to communities to create awareness during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. Awareness Campaigns focusing on the youth were conducted in Roodepan, Paballelo, Danielskuil, Tsineng, De Aar, Groblershoop and Olifantshoek.
