A 32-year-old intoxicated woman was stripped and beaten by the community after she left her 2-month-old baby unattended while consuming alcohol with friends.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were called out to Phase 6 in Waterloo – KZN at approximately 16:01. On arrival, RUSA Members discovered a large mob around a naked female. They were beating her with sticks.
It was established that the woman left her child unattended from yesterday (Monday) afternoon and was consuming alcohol with friends. Neighbours heard the baby crying and gained entry into the house. They removed the infant and cared for him. His intoxicated mother returned this afternoon and requested that the child be returned to her. The community then gathered and assaulted her.
They complained that it was not the first incident of child abandonment. The woman has four other children aged between two and fifteen. She informed Reaction Officers that she is an unfit mother and intends on relocating the child to Harding – KZN to reside with his siblings and grandmother. RUSA Members made contact with the female’s family who were unaware that she was abandoning the baby.
The child was handed over to an aunt while authorities investigate further.
