On 09 December 2024, the Tshwane Regiment, deployed under the Joint Tactical Headquarters KwaZulu-Natal, conducted vehicle patrols in the Dukuza-Moyeni area of Upper Tugela. During this operation, the unit received a tip-off regarding suspected dagga smuggling activities taking place at a specific residence.
In response to this intelligence, the SANDF members collaborated with Upper Tugela SAPS and promptly adjusted to execute a cordon and search operation. During the search, four male suspects were apprehended. The following items were recovered at the scene: 21 bags of dagga, three cellular phones, and a sum of R3,300.00 in cash.
It was determined that three of the suspects were from Lesotho, while one was a South African citizen. The total weight of the seized dagga was 293.8 kilograms, with each gram valued at R4.00, resulting in an estimated total value of R1,175,000.00. Stationed troops at the KwaZulu-Natal border with Lesotho remain alert and prepared to intercept any unlawful activities in the area.
