Firearm recovered and robbery suspect arrested in Phoenix

A firearm was recovered and a robbery suspect arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) in Phoenix – KZN.

A Reaction Officer was on patrol on Lenham Drive when he was flagged down by a scholar. The male informed the RUSA Member that he had just been robbed of his cellphone by two suspects. The complainant provided a clothing description of the sought after suspects.

The Reaction Officer called for additional backup and set out in search of the robbers. He spotted them a short distance away. The suspects fled in different directions when they noticed him approaching. The Officer pursued and apprehended one of the males. A 9mm Beretta pistol with a filed off serial number was recovered in his possession.

The suspect informed Reaction Officers during an interview that he is a car guard at the Phoenix Plaza on Parthenon Street in Starwood – KZN. He escalated to armed robberies after he found the firearm in the parking lot of the mall. The suspect is believed to be linked to several robberies in the Lenham/Westham area in recent weeks.

The suspect was detained at Phoenix SAPS.
