Shootout with police claimed the life of a wanted suspect

A high-risk police operation in Msobomvu ended in the fatal shooting of a wanted suspect following an armed confrontation with the police.

It is alleged that on 28 January 2025, at approximately 11:50, members of the Butterworth Crime Intelligence Unit were actively following information regarding a 50-year-old male suspect linked to multiple serious crimes, including murder, house robbery, and armed robbery.

The suspect was spotted taking a taxi in Msobomvu route to Bika, the members called for backup from Msobomvu Police Station. Members attached to Detective and Visible Policing swiftly responded, tracking the taxi until it stopped to offload passengers at Cuba Township, Butterworth.

As police tactically moved in to arrest the suspect, he exited the vehicle armed with a pistol and opened fire on police. The members retaliated, fatally wounding the suspect on the scene. A 9mm pistol was recovered from the deceased.
