Man who robbed granny arrested in Chatsworth

A 54-year-old Chatsworth – KZN resident has been tracked & arrested by Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) after a 66-year-old pensioner was robbed on her first date in Ethekweni – KZN yesterday afternoon.

The granny met the man on dating site Badoo & was fetched by the him at Isipingo – KZN. After transporting her to Galleria Mall in Amazamtoti to draw her monthly SASSA Grant, the couple drove 66 kilometers to Hazelmere Dam. After three hours she was driven to a garage to freshen up. The suspect them sped off with her bag, R2000 in cash & he
mobile phone. He then deleted his profile on Badoo.

Reaction Officers were approached by the victim & her family for assistance. Officers began tracking the suspect last night after CCTV footage showed the vehicle with the registration obscured. After a lengthy investigation Reaction Officers began searching for the suspect in Effingham – KZN & several other towns in Ethekweni. The search was abandoned at approx 01:15 this morning. The car, a white Opel Corsa used in the crime had changed ownership on three occasions in recent years, but was not registered to the current owner.

Early this morning Reaction Officers received information and located the car in Monteford – Chatsworth in Kwazulu Natal. After a brief observation Officers approached and 74-year-woman who pointed out her son
as the perpetrator. The suspect was located in his bedroom and arrested.

When interviewed, the suspect informed Reaction Officers that he had seen an opportunity to flee with her belongings when the woman had got off his vehicle to freshen up. He explained that he decided to speed off when the pensioner had become demanding for financial assistance after they had engaged in sexual intercourse at the Hazelmere Dam. He said that he was further infuriated when she questioned him regarding the use of a sex enhancement tablet. After fleeing he drove to Sibaya Casino & lost R1600 at the slot machines. He then used R400 of the stolen money to buy engine oil for his vehicle.

The suspects mother further informed Officers that her son had previously been arrested for Rape of a woman in Maydon Wharf – KZN and had been remanded in Westwille Prison for several similar cases since 2020. She added that her son had thrown the victims mobile phone behind a built-in cupboard upon noticing Reaction Officers outside her property.
The suspect was handed over to the South African Police Services (SAPS) & is currently in detention.
