Once again, illegal abalone dealers were dealt yet another blow when SAPS in conjunction with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) members nabbed three suspect and confiscated abalone worth approximately R500 000.00 in Lorraine today 20 March 2025.
On the abovementioned date at approximately 07:40, SAPS members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit, Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit and Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), executed a search warrant at a residence in Longwy Avenue, Lorraine, after they obtained information regarding abalone activities at a town house.
During a search of the premises the members found abalone which was in big fridges. A total of 4079 units of wet abalone with an estimated value of R500 000.00 were confiscated. The members further confiscated 6 x 450lt deep freezers, scales, cellphones, notebook, car keys and a vehicle that was used in the commissioned of the crime.
The three suspects aged between 32 and 49 were detained on charges of contravention of the Marine Living Resource Act, 19 of 1998 Regulation 36 sub sect 1 – illegal possession of abalone and Illegal Immigrant contravening Section 9(1) of Act 13/2002 they will appear in the Gqeberha magistrate on Monday 24 March 2025.
Illegal abalone activity is continuing in Gqeberha however, SAPS members are leaving no stone unturned as they clamp down on criminals. Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata reiterated that illegal abalone activities is a huge concern and commended SAPS members and DFFE for their alertness in nabbing these smugglers. The poaching of these molluscs can have a significant negative impact on the endangered species so efforts to apprehend those involved is crucial.
By apprehending abalone poachers, our officials are not only upholding the law but also sending a strong message that illegal activities like this will not be tolerated,’ warned Maj Gen Ncata.
