A 36 year old man was arrested by Reaction Officers in KwaMashu – KZN after he stole the bank card of a ATM today (Thursday).
The suspect distracted an elderly male who was using an ATM at a busy Cash & Carry in Phoenix – KZN today (Thursday). He was fleeing in silver VW Polo when Officers from Lion Security based at the premises attempted to stop him. He intended to run over the armed Officers, but they opened fire on his vehicle. He sped off from the premises in the direction of KwaMashu – KZN.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at approximately 09:14. Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search and spotted the suspect’s vehicle on Malendela Road in KwaMashu – KZN. He was in the process of repairing the front left tyre that was damaged in the shooting.
The suspect fled over a palisade fence after he noticed RUSA Members approaching. A lengthy foot chase along a railway line ensued which resulted in his arrest. The stolen Capitec bank card was recovered in his possession.
Reaction Officers returned with the suspect to his vehicle while awaiting the arrival of the South African Police Service (SAPS). A crowd of approximately eighty (80) people bitter about the high levels of crime in the area threatened to attack the male.
The suspect was positively identified by the complainant and handed over to Police on their arrival.
