The Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Molefi Tsotsotso applauded the members and other law enforcement agencies for their continued efforts in removing illegal firearms and drugs from the streets and ensuring that the community of Johannesburg is and feels safe.
Over 420 suspects were arrested for various offenses, including possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, dealing in drugs, selling liquor without a license, and contravention of the Immigration Act. The arrests were made during crime prevention operations held across the district from 28 March to 30 March 2025. Among the suspects, 68 were arrested during a multidisciplinary operation Shanela, held across the Moroka and Lenasia South policing precincts. The operation was joined by other law enforcement agencies, including JMPD, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Siyabangena patrollers, CPF, and private security companies.
The police also arrested 149 suspects during high-density and station commander’s operations conducted throughout the district. During operations held in the Jeppe, Cleveland, and Eldorado Park policing precincts, four suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. In a separate incident in Cleveland, another suspect was arrested for impersonating police officers and possessing an unlicensed firearm, while another suspect was arrested for illegally discharging a firearm in a municipal area.
In Alexandra, one suspect was arrested for dealing in drugs, and the police confiscated 10 mandrax tablets worth a street value of R500.00 and 10 packets of crystal meth. Meanwhile, during an illicit mining operation held in Doornkop, eight illegal immigrants were arrested. The police also confiscated gas cylinders, phenduka, and a garden spade.
The detectives also traced suspects across the district, resulting in the arrest of 205 suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes, including gender-based violence. The suspects will appear in various magistrate courts soon.
