Police in the Nelson Mandela district have left no stone unturned in eradicating illegal firearms in the District. Three suspects were arrested and four firearms confiscated within a 24-hour period in unrelated incidents on 26 April 2025.
In the first incident in the earlier hours of Saturday 26 April 2025 at approximately 01:30, SAPS New Brighton Crime Prevention Unit were following up on information of a suspect in possession of a firearm. While driving in Stofile Street, New Brighton,the members noticed the suspect and he attempted to flee. The members pursued the suspect on foot and arrested him. A 9mm confiscated Z88 firearm (serial number filed off) and 10 rounds of ammunition were confiscated. The suspect (26) was detained on charges of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.
In another unrelated incident the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, on the same day at approximately 08:20, executed a search warrant at Brown Street, Schauderville. During the search of the property for drugs and firearms, the members searched an informal outer building at the back of the main house and confiscated a 9mm parabellum firearm with 16 rounds of ammunition and a 45 ACP Norinco firearm with seven rounds of ammunition. A suspect (36) was arrested on charges of possession of illegal firearms and illegal possession of ammunition.
In another unrelated incident also on the same day at approximately 23h45 SAPS Kwadwesi members with the assistance of the team operating under Operation Bamba were busy with patrols in Lixolilizwe Street, Kwadwesi Extention when they noticed a suspicious white VW polo. The members stopped the vehicle and during the search the members found the suspect in possession of a firearm. The suspect (41) was arrested on charges of illegal possession of a suspected stolen firearm.
The confiscated firearms will be sent to ballistics for analysis. The arrested suspects will be appearing in their respective courts in due course.
