One man was killed and two others injured last night after a vehicle collided with a concrete barrier on the N3 Lions Head Road in Pietermaritzburg late last night.
ER24 paramedics and rescue services arrived on scene and found the wrecked light motor vehicle lying in the middle of the road. Pieces of the vehicle were spread across the entire road.
On inspection of the scene, paramedics found the body of a male passenger lying 5 metres away from the vehicle. The patient had sustained fatal injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle. Unfortunately there was nothing more that could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene.
Two other patients were found inside the vehicle. One passenger lay trapped inside the vehicle in a critical condition while the driver had sustained only minor injuries.
Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the critically injured patient in a 45 minute operation.
Once freed, the critically injured patients was provided with advanced life support interventions and transported to Greys Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The driver was treated for his minor injuries and thereafter transported to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg Hospital for further observations.
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
