With pleasant weather making a welcome return, resident across KwaZulu-Natal flocked to swimming pools, dams and the coast, with tragic consequence for some.
A twenty-year-old Dambuza man drowned in the midst of a midday jaunt with friends in the swimming pool of the Cedara Agricultural College in Hilton in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
It is thought that four youths had gone to the murky swimming pool to cool off. The young man is thought to have struck his head on the bottom of the pool and did not surface, his friends unable to find him in the unclear water.
Netcare911 Paramedics responded to the scene and were unable to locate the man in the Olympic sized pool. South African Police Service Rescue Divers were called to the scene and managed to find the man’s body.
He was declared dead at the scene.
In another incident the search continues for a man who went missing while boating on Inanda Dam. It is thought that the man was aboard a ski boat and had removed his life jacket to take a swim. He dived into the water and never surfaced.
Netcare911’s Specialised Rescue Unit officers, South African Police Search and Rescue Officers and members of the NSRI responded to the scene and starting searching for the man. After several hours the search was called off and will be resumed at first light.
The man is missing and presumed to have drowned.
A five-year-old boy is in a serious but stable condition in the Prince M’Shiyeni Memorial Hospital after a near drowning at the paddling pools on Amanzimtoti Main Beach this afternoon.
It’s believed that the boy, unable to swim, was pushed into the pool and got into distress. Bathers alerted eThekwini Metro Lifeguards to the boy who was at the bottom of the pool.
They pulled him from the water and initiated resuscitation efforts. Netcare911 Paramedics responded to the scene and took over care. The boy’s condition improved drastically and he was transported by ambulance to hospital for further care.
Lifeguards stationed at the beach must be commended on a brilliant job.
