As part of crime-fighting initiatives, increased deployments of members of the Flying Squad, other police units, Metro Police and Gauteng Traffic are gaining momentum and criminals have been dealt a hard blow as sixteen (16) vehicles and nineteen (19) firearms were recovered over the weekend operations. Some of these vehicles have been identified as being used to commit serious and violent crimes including theft of other vehicles, hijacking, business and house robberies.
The vehicles including a Cadillac stolen in Brackendowns were recovered in all areas of Gauteng as far as Springs and Carltonville. Some were found at the Johannesburg suburbs of Booysens, Mondeor, Brixton, Hillbrow, Fairlands and Soweto. These vehicles includes seven (7) Toyota vehicles, three (3) VW vehicles, four (4) Nissan models, a Ford Ranger and a white BMW.
Twelve arrested suspects were charged with possession of suspected stolen vehicles and they are also being profiled on suspicion that they are involved in serious and violent crimes. One of the suspect from Eldorado Park has been described as serial thief of motor vehicles at several malls in the South of Johannesburg.
Also during the operations and routine patrols, 19 handguns were also seized and 21 suspects arrested. All the suspects appeared at the various Magistrate Courts today.
Through greater community engagement and collaboration with the police, the safety and security of the Gauteng communities will be ensured. Therefore members of the public are urged to report any suspicious vehicles and people as there will be a quick response due to increased deployments.
