A total of 150 shacks were destroyed in a fire in the Masiphumelele informal settlement in Cape Town, the Disaster Risk Management Centre said on Sunday.
Spokesperson for the centre, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, said that three hundred people had been affected after 150 shacks were destroyed in the blaze which started at around 07:00.
By 10:00 the fire was under control.
Fifteen fire engines and a helicopter were used to battle the fire.
“No fatalities have been reported. All persons have been accounted for.”
A community hall has been opened for the next few days.
People are being registered and also issued with building material.
