Two suspects, aged 30 and 32, will appear in Kestell Magistrate Court on Friday. They will appear on a charge of attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen vehicle and driving a motor vehicle without valid driver’s license.
On Wednesday, 7 November 2018 at about 07:18, police in Kestell received information from a tracking company that they are tracking a red Hyundai Elantra and that the occupants are heavily armed. It is alleged that these suspects robbed somebody in Vereeniging and they are on their way to Kestell. Immediately two officers, Warrant Officer Marais and Captain Viljoen started to be on the look-out for the said car.
They spotted it on the R57 road at about 7:34 and placed the police van in the middle of the road so as to block the suspects’ vehicle which was driving at high speed. The suspects tried to speed off but Capt. Viljoen pointed a firearm on them and they allegedly swerved the car and hit the police van and WO Marais who was nearer sustained injuries on his left shoulder, and was treated at a local hospital and later released. Capt. Viljoen fired shots at the suspect’s car which forced it to come to a standstill and both suspects were arrested on the scene.
The suspects were linked to a house robbery and theft of motor vehicle in Sharpeville. After the suspect’s appearance in Kestell Magistrate court on Friday they will be transferred to Gauteng province to stand trial on other charges.
