A woman has been killed and her 21 year old daughter is in a critical condition after a horrendous accident on the N4 in Brits approximately two kilometers from the weigh bridge near the Toll Plaza.
When the Hartbeespoort Medical Rescue Unit arrived at the scene they could see a Hyundai Atos that had been extensively crushed in the front. Although the exact circumstances surrounding the accident are still unclear at this stage, it is believed that a Mercedes collided almost head on into the Atos, with most of the impact into the front passenger side. Sadly, the woman sitting in the passenger seat was already deceased upon arrival of the paramedics, and her daughter who was driving the vehicle has sustained critical injuries.
According to the paramedics at the scene, her legs were badly broken, and she was extensively trapped within the wrecked metal. It became the tough job of the Fire and Rescue services to cut away at the wreck to free the woman for transportation. As the minutes passed, paramedics decided that they would need rapid transportation once she was freed and they immediately called in the ER24 Discovery Medicopter.
It took close on an hour to free the woman with paramedics all the while working tirelessly to stabilise her condition. Once out of the vehicle she was quickly loaded into the Medicopter and taken to the Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria for further treatment.
The Mercedes’ three occupants were left with minor injuries only, and they were taken per road ambulance to hospital for further assessment.
Police attended the scene and would investigate the cause of the accident.
