A man in his 60’s has been injured after he was allegedly knocked by a vehicle on the Contermanskloof road near Tygervalley Road this evening. The vehicle that is said to have knocked him was no longer on scene when paramedics arrived, and thus the cause of the incident is not known.
When Belville paramedics arrived at the scene, they were shown by witnesses to where the man was lying near the stream at the bottom of an embankment next to the road. The embankment is not too far down, but the man was flung so hard that he had broken both his right arm and his left lower leg very badly. He had also been badly injured over his face, having sustained deep cuts to the area as well as possible broken bones in the face.
According to witnesses, the farm worker was trying to cross the road and either vehicle or pedestrian had unfortunately misjudged the distances between them. The man was then flung off the road to where paramedics came to find him. They immediately placed the hurt man onto their spinal immobilisation board and carried him up to the road. Just then the Advanced Life Support paramedic arrived on scene and he treated the patient for his pain while the others dressed his wounds and splinted his broken bones.
The man was in a stable condition although in a slightly confused state. He was taken to Tygerberg Hospital for further assessment and care.
Police will be investigating the apparent hit and run incident.
