Efforts to fight the spreading of illegal firearms in the Western Cape have once again resulted in the arrests of several suspects on charges relating to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
On Monday 20 May 2024 at about 05:10, in Peter Barlow Road, Bellville South, police members were busy with patrols when they noticed a suspicious looking male walking down the streets. The members searched him upon which they found a .38 special revolver with ammunition and drugs in his possession. A 44-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of drugs and a firearm and ammunition
In an unrelated matter, members of the Anti-Economic and Extortion Task Team were busy with crime prevention patrols in the Portlands area on Monday when they saw an unknown male who acted suspicious when he saw the police vehicles approaching. The members searched him and found a 9mm pistol without serial number in his possession. The 29-year-old man was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm. Further investigation led the members to a premises in Uitenhage Street, Portlands, Mitchells Plain, where they found a 9mm pistol with ammunition, an electronic scale, a packet containing cocaine and 25 sachets cocaine with an estimated street value of over R50 000.00.
The 29-year-old man was arrested on charges of possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition as well as for dealing and possession of drugs.
Early this morning at about 03:10, Worcester SAPS members were on patrols in Avianpark when they spotted two males walking down the road who immediately ran upon spotting the police patrol vehicle. The members gave chase and they noticed one of them dropping an item next to the fence of the Clinic. The men kept on running but was caught by the members and found a knife in his possession. The members took the suspect back to where he dropped the item. They then found a rusted double barrel shotgun with one 12 bore cartridge. The 29-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and the possession of a dangerous weapon.
Meanwhile at about 00:40 this morning members attached to Anti-Gang Unit followed up information about firearms being stored at a premises in Nigel Court, Melton Road, Clarke Estate. Upon arrival at the address the members searched the premises and found a 9mm Ruger and a Vector SP2 pistols with 16 9mm rounds of ammunition underneath a kitchen cupboard. They confiscated the firearms and arrested the 43-year-old suspect an on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
The suspects are due to appear in the Bellville, Mitchells Plain, Worcester, Goodwood Magistrates’ courts respectively on the mentioned charges.
The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen TE Patekile commended the members involved for their fight against gangsterism, drugs and guns on our streets. Furthermore, he expressed his sincere gratitude to all members for their commitment in executing their duties with diligence.
