As we bid farewell to 2024 and welcome 2025, our efforts to ensure road safety during the festive season remain in full force. The latest statistics are a cause for concern, with 205 drivers arrested for drunk driving since the beginning of December, and an additional 24 apprehended since Christmas Day.
Speeding also remains a significant threat to road safety, with a recent arrest of a 48-year-old female driver who was caught travelling at 171km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 freeway near Modimolle. This brings the total number of drivers arrested for overspeeding in the province since December to eight.
As we approach New Year’s Eve, we urge all road users to exercise caution and responsibility.
To would-be drunk drivers, be warned: law enforcement officers will be strategically deployed across the province, including around liquor outlets, to address traffic offences and enforce compliance.
We appeal to all road users to prioritize road safety and never drive after consuming alcohol. Instead, plan ahead, appoint a sober driver, or utilize public transportation.
Pedestrians should remain conspicuous, vigilant, and cautious when walking near roads, utilizing designated crossings, and adhering to traffic signals.
As we welcome 2025, we wish all road users a happy and incident-free start to the new year. We invite you to join us as road safety advocates, promoting awareness to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities on our roads.
Together, let’s commit to prioritizing road safety and ensuring that Every Day Without A Road Death #ProjectEDWARD
