The Tactical Response Team (TRT) in the OR Tambo District executed two critical operations aimed at combating armed robbery and firearm-related crimes within the region.
The team followed intelligence on armed robbery suspects and proceeded to Mlonyeni Street, Southridge, where they encountered the suspect. Upon searching the premises, the team recovered a large quantity of different types of cellphones suspected to be stolen, which the suspect who could not account for. He was immediately arrested for possession of suspected stolen property linked to other robbery cases.
In a separate operation the team also followed up on reliable intelligence regarding a robbery in the Sulenkama area, Qumbu. The team targeted a homestead in Gwadana locality, Gqukunqa A/A, Qumbu, where they met with gunfire, and a shootout ensued. The suspect, believed to be the primary person of interest, was fatally wounded in the exchange. Police recovered a 9mm pistol with an erased serial number and 9mm rounds of ammunition.
Charges have been laid for possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, attempted murder, and attack on police. The firearm will be sent for ballistic analysis.
An inquest has also been opened for investigation by IPID.
