Kudakwashe Mpofu (33), a Zimbabwean national, appeared in the Mmabatho Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 29 January 2025, facing charges of fraud.
The accused was arrested by members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation on Tuesday, 28 January 2025, in Mahikeng. His arrest follows an investigation into allegations of using a fraudulent South African permanent residence permit when he applied for a job at the North West Development Corporation in March 2023.
Reports indicate that the accused was subsequently hired as an asset manager and later became an acting chief financial officer. Shortly after that he was appointed on a permanent basis as the CFO. The accused was reportedly paid over R3 million in salaries.
Following an investigation, Mpofu was apprehended and charged with fraud. He appeared in court, and his matter was postponed to 03 February 2025 for formal bail application.
The acting North West Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Brigadier Silas Munzhedzi, and the Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, have commended collaborative work between the two entities in ensuring that the accused is brought to justice.
