On Monday, 03 February 2025, the multi-disciplinary contingent of Operation Vala Umgodi which consists of the police proactive and combatting members, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Vetus Private security company received information from Crime Intelligence about alleged illegal mining activities taking place at Koingnaas mine in Kleinzee in the Namakwa District.
The team deployed to deal with illicit mining in the area operationalised the information.
Subsequently disruptive operations were executed at the identified location, and nine suspects were apprehended who were actively involved in illicit mining activities.
Of the nine persons, six aged between 33 and 63 were apprehended for illicit mining and trespassing.
Furthermore, the other three suspects aged between 32 and 42 were apprehended for illegal mining, trespassing, and for being in the country illegally after they failed to produce documentation that allowed them to be in the country legally.
The police seized bags of suspected diamond bearing gravel and tools believed to be utilized in the commission of illicit mining.
SAPS remains resolute in its commitment to eradicate illicit mining.
