A Missionlands – KZN resident who initially informed Reaction Officers that he was attacked with a panga by five men in a white VW Polo while seeking employment in Everest Hieghts – KZN last Thursday (6/03/2024) has retracted his story.
Dylynn Devkaran (23) and his wife Vanitha John (39) arrived at the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Headquarters this morning (Tuesday) wanting to inform First Responders that the explanation he had offered on the day he was found bleeding profusely in the Verulam CBD was Incorrect. He added that he was incoherent after the incident due to extreme pain & blood loss.
Devkaran, a resident of Missionlands – KZN explained that on the said day he entered a business premises in the Verulam CBD & purchased dagga. He added that he smoked the dagga inside the premises & was accused of previously stealing a bag belonging to a customer. According to Devkaran a man at the store produced a sword measuring approx. 1.2 meters and attacked him slashing him on his body and head repeatedly. Devkaran said that he tried to explain to his attacker that was wrongfully assaulted on several occasions in cases of mistaken identity and he was not a
criminal.
According to the injured man, two of the employees of the cannabis stored loaded him into a bakkie and drove on the R102 towards Stanger – KZN. He believed that they were going to dump his body in the sugar cane field and jumped off when the vehicle slowed down. One of the men grabbed onto him while the driver accelerated. At that stage his ankles were broken from dragging on the tarmac. He added that the men sped off when he fell off the vehicle and they noticed an approaching bakkie. The motorist transported him back to the Verulam CBD & called RUSA Operations Center for assistance.
Devkaran said that he could identify the men that attempted to kill him with a sword and opted to open a criminal case with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
