An unforeseen breakdown turned into a tragedy at around 9pm on Saturday evening December 8, 2012, when a Toyota Venture broke down and the occupant had to push the vehicle out of the road, reports Ashley Treurnich, spokesman for the Matrix Road Safety Association.
“Another vehicle travelling down Cumberland road in Bryanston, ploughed into the venture at high speed”, said Treurnich. He added that paramedics from EMER-G-MED responded to the scene to find that one person had been killed outright as a result of the accident, and that an additional four people were injured, one seriously, after suffering head and spinal injuries and a fractured arm.
Treurnich urges motorists to be careful where pushing vehicles along roads at night after breaking down, as other motorists would not see them in time, especially when it was dark.
“Drivers should be aware of potential danger situations on the road and ensure that they can brake safely in the distance they can see”, said Treurnich.
