The incident occurred early in the morning on the Richmond road in Marianhill west of Durban, close to the Engen Garage and involved a bakkie and light motor vehicle.
Paramedics from several ambulance services responded to the incident and where shocked to find that five people had died in the collision and that two other people had been seriously injured. The bakkie involved in the incident had also caught alight and the car was completely involved and both had to be extinguished by the fire department.
The injured patients were transported to RK Khans hospital for continued care by paramedics from KZN EMS.
The details regarding the cause of the collision are being investigated by the police.
